How Garbett Homes Helps Tackle Utah's Housing Crisis

Posted Mar 01, 2024 by Garbett Homes

There’s no way around it. The beautiful state of Utah is in a severe housing crisis. A painful side effect of popularity. There aren’t enough homes for sale or for rent to go around. Making the dream of homeownership harder to obtain. It’s a difficult issue that will only be solved through the hard work and contributions of many different stakeholders. Here’s how we here at Garbett Homes do our part to take on this difficult issue.

We Increase The Housing Supply
Yes, that’s a pretty obvious statement, and one any home builder offering new homes in Utah can make. But take the time to really think about what that means. Every new addition to the housing supply decreases the overall demand for housing. Meaning that every new home that we build adds at minimum one home to the housing supply. With more homes becoming available if our homebuyer is moving into our home by selling their existing home.

We Build Infill Communities
Have you ever driven down an older neighborhood in your city and seen an empty field between two homes? One that isn’t really being used for anything? Or while you were growing up did you have the local abandoned “haunted house” that had fallen into severe disrepair? Those types of land are perfect candidates for a type of construction project called “infill development.” In the case of Garbett Homes, we would take that empty lot, or the land that “haunted house” sat on and build a new community of townhomes or even a small community of single-family homes in its place. Allowing us to not only increase the supply of homes in Utah, but add homes where you already want to live! All without further damaging the natural environments that make this state so beautiful.

We Work With Local Suppliers and Contractors Whenever Possible
We at Garbett Homes want Utahans and soon-to-be Utahns to own homes. Part of achieving that goal is making sure that Utah businesses continue to thrive. To that end, we make sure to work with local suppliers and contractors wherever possible. Allowing us to keep more of every dollar you spend on our homes in the state we all love. And when dollars stay local, locals have more dollars to spend. Strengthening Utah's overall economy.

Like we said before, Utah’s housing crisis is an extremely difficult problem that no one organization can solve alone. It will take the work of non-profits, private citizens, local government, and home builders to get it done. We are proud of the work that we do to help tackle this massive problem. We also continue to explore ways we can be an even larger part of the solution, like beginning to offer the option of adding an ADU to some single-family home communities. If you would like to see our efforts in action, come visit our communities in Murray, Millcreek, Midvale, Salt Lake City, and Wasatch County!
