Utah is many things in many places. Southern Utah is home to fantastic outdoor recreation opportunities, a tony-award winning Shakespeare festival, a history tied to Hollywood all wrapped in a stunning desert backdrop. The four counties that make up the Wasatch Front (Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah) offer amazing sports venues, a strong job market full of innovative industries, five universities, a thriving arts scene and plenty of communities to raise a family in. But there is an emerging region in Utah where you can have many of these same things with a more laidback environment. Let’s get to know the Wasatch Back.
Where is the Wasatch Back?
You’re probably already familiar with a little bit of this emerging region. Just a 45 minute drive from Salt Lake City and comprising of Wasatch and Summit counties, Park City is the most famous mountain town in this area. However, the Wasatch Back is also anchored by Heber City and Midway, along with other growing mountain and farm towns. Creating a relaxed, welcoming and more private atmosphere than other regions in the state.
What Makes It So Special?
The easy answer is the high-end ski resorts that have hosted many national and international competitions. Including the 2002 and upcoming 2034 Winter Olympics. But there is more to this region than skiing. For over 40 years this area was home to the Sundance Film Festival and looks to continue this important institution for independent filmmakers far into the future. Many reservoirs, cool alpine lakes, and state parks create unparalleled opportunities for recreation even when the snow has melted. The Sheep Dog festival in Soldier Hollow is a bucket list event. While fresh mountain air, and beautiful views all but force you to slow down and take a break from whatever troubles you.
Why Should I Live Here?
It’s not just about the stunning views, outdoor recreation, and Hollywood at its most dressed down. Aficionados of fine dining will be able to enjoy steak houses, local breweries, and other fine cusine options. Rail history enthusiasts can enjoy several different enchanting train tours with the Heber Valley Railroad. Few places offer so much in such a compact area. Charming small businesses allow you to find charming home decor and personalized purchasing experiences. Why wouldn’t you live here if you could!
