Water conservation. It’s an issue that every Utahn should be thinking about. Homebuilders are no exception to this conversation. How we decide to landscape our homes sets the tone for how much water you, our homeowner, will use to maintain the yard you have been given. Garbett Homes takes this responsibility very seriously. This has led us to begin moving towards Grassless Localscapes as a new standard in our communities, beginning with Waterstone, our newest single family home community in Murray. Bringing a new standard of water conservation, curb appeal, and environmental health to our communities. Let’s talk about what this standard is and why we chose it.
Grassless Localscapes Explained
In previous communities, Garbett Homes has applied Localscapes principles to reduce the amount of grass in our home’s yards. Replacing it with climate appropriate, drought-resistant plants watered by a drip irrigation system. In combination with water retaining mulch, this means that our homebuyers use less water to maintain their beautiful lawns. Grassless Localscapes just takes this a step further by removing the grass lawn portion of the yard to make the water conservation go even further.
Why Are We Doing This?
Let’s be honest, most people are attached to their grass lawns because that’s the visual in everyone’s head when they describe the American Dream. White picket fence, rich green lawn, single family home. A small castle to call your own. Grass lawns are a symbol of success! The ideal! Except, grass needs a lot of water, and doesn’t give a lot back in return. It doesn’t feed bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. You can’t eat it so growing it won’t save money on grocery bills. It’s just a high maintenance decoration, taking up most of your water consumption, meaning it’s the lion’s share of your water bill. All while being just like everyone else’s high maintenance, high water consuming, yard.
As Utah’s leading locally owned green home builder, Garbett Homes sees it as our responsibility to reverse the grass lawn trend. Not only by bringing Grassless Localscapes to our communities, but to give those that neighbor our communities an idea of what a Grassless Localscape can look like for them. And how it can not only improve their home values, but help do their part to preserve Utah waterways. Pushing everyone in Utah towards a better, more water responsible future. Not to mention, it definitely looks better from the curb than a green rectangle.
To build a more sustainable tomorrow the way we build homes has to change. Garbett Homes is proud to push the envelope on Utah homes and lead the charge.
