After researching the perfect neighborhoods, touring countless model homes, hiking through mountains of paperwork, you’ve finally done it! You have closed on your brand new beautiful Utah home. Now it’s time to prepare for move-in day! We understand if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed at this point! The logistics of moving can be daunting! So we’re happy to offer you some tips to make your move-in day more of a dream than a nightmare.
Don’t Do it Alone
No. This tip isn’t just about saving time. Although that is one of the reasons. It's also about making sure you stay safe during your move. After all, while that soft king sized mattress might look harmless it can still send you to the hospital if you aren’t careful. There’s a lot that goes into the moving process, which means a lot can go wrong. Getting help from friends and family or hiring professionals like our friends at The Other Side Moving, can help take a lot of risk out of the equation.
Start Early
This is especially important if you’re moving in the summer. Even with help moving still consists of a lot of lifting, walking, loading, and organizing, especially if you don’t hire professionals. You don’t want to add heat to those conditions if you can help it. But even if it isn’t summertime, starting early allows you to have more time to make sure everything is done right and doesn’t leave you stuck having dinner at ten o’clock that night. Where all that you can get is the bad pizza.
Eat a Good Breakfast
Speaking of food. Make sure you have a substantial and filling breakfast. It’s a busy day and you’re going to need the energy. Don’t start the day on an empty stomach or with a caffeinated beverage and a slice of toast. Schedule changing complications can happen during a move-in day so make sure you have something filling.
Be Packed Up Before You Move
Especially if other people are coming over to help you. Respect your time and theirs by having as much packed up and ready to go as you can. This can also help keep you organized, give any pets or children you might have time to adapt, and ensure nothing important gets left behind.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Remember how we said that your move will consist of lifting, walking, and loading? You will be physically exerting yourself much more than a typical daily workout. You’re already going to be very tired by the end of your moving day. Dehydration can compound these issues by causing exhaustion and disorientation. Make sure everyone who is working with you stays hydrated by drinking plenty of water. An electrolyte rich sports drink if you absolutely must drink something else. But just make sure everyone is hydrated until the work is done.
Triple Check Your Old Place
How many heartbreaking stories have you heard about family heirlooms getting left behind during a move? Important childhood tokens? Beloved pets? That’s why it’s important to be thorough when you’re leaving your old home for the last time. Just to make sure that nothing gets left behind you didn’t plan on leaving behind. Do not just check once or twice, do that extra third check and be certain before closing the door for the last time.
Have an Unpack Plan
Arriving at your new home for the first time is kind of like coming back from a vacation. Unpacking is the worst part. However, unlike a vacation, waiting to unpack after moving comes with some higher consequences than a limited wardrobe. You don’t pack your entire kitchen with you on a vacation after all. Having a plan that at least prioritizes what gets unpacked first can not only save you time, but money. Takeout adds up if it’s all you eat for a week or two.
